"Fabric Covering with Ray Stits"
The Master, the man who invented the Poly-Fiber system (formerly know as the Stits Poly-Fiber Aircraft Covering process),
takes you on a VHS tour de force through the wonderful world of fabric covering. Here's two hours of how to do it correctly, how
to do it incorrectly, plus some of Ray's dramatic ways of making a point.

 INSPECTION HOLE COVERS
New recessed-center and flanged-edge design will not creep off center due to vibration in prop wash areas. 4-13/16"dia., .020
aluminum. Strong 11/16" steel spring strap mounted with two, 1/8" solid aluminum rivets.

INSPECTION ACCESS REINFORCING RINGS
Injection molded from CAB plastic. Beveled edges, 4 5/8" outside diameter x 3 7/16" inside diameter x .035 thick.

SEAPLANE GROMMETS
Stamped and heat formed from .032 CAB plastic sheet. 1 1/8" outside diameter with 9/16" x 3/16" lip opening.

 ALUMINUM DRAIN GROMMETS
1/4" hole x 3/4" outside diameter x .010 thick. The best choice when
melting the drain hole thru polyester with a hot probe. Will not melt or curl and warp with age and are reusable. Attach with Poly-Tak.

 PLASTIC DRAIN GROMMETS
Injection molded from CAB plastic. 7/32" hole x 3/4" outside
diameter x .030 thick. Attach with Poly-Tak.

SELF-TAPPING METAL SCREWS
Low profile, slot head, type A, pointed end. Used on some aircraft models to attach fabric to metal wing ribs and empennage ribs in lieu of rib lacing.

ALUMINUM REINFORCING WASHERS
Recommended in substitute for original plastic washers under screws and pop rivets where fabric is anchored to metal wing rib or empennage
ribs. 2024-T3 aluminum, .128 hole x 1/2" outside diameter x .016 thick.

SEWING NEEDLES
CURVED: 3" and 6" for hand stitching.
STRAIGHT: 12" and 18" rib lacing needles.
CURVED TIP:
12" and 18" for the hidden rib lace knot illustrated in the Poly-Fiber Procedure Manual.

T-HEAD PINS
Bright, polished, corrosion resistant steel. 1-3/4" length. Used to temporarily secure fabric in place when
recovering aircraft surfaces, upholstery, furniture, etc. 475 pins per 1/2 pound box.

PAINT STRAINER CONES
Fine mesh, 60x48, for filtering all pigmented finishes, Poly-Brush, Poly-Spray, varnish and other liquids, imprinted with Stits Poly-Fiber advertising.

BLIND RIB RIVETS
All aluminum, 1/8" dia. body - 3/8" dia. head - .031 to .125 grip range - 156 Ibs. shear - 235 Ibs. tinsel to attach fabric to
967 and later Champion/Bellanca aircraft with .032 x 1/2" wide rib caps.

 CLOSED END BLIND RIVETS
Used to seal tubing vent holes after welding and
installation of Tubeseal Corrosion Inhibitor.

SANDING PAPER
Silicon carbon on waterproof paper. 3M wet or dry Tri-M-ite brand 280, 320 and 400 grit.

|
TACK CLOTH
A treated cloth used as a very light wipe to attract and remove dust, lint and static charged particles from a surface just before spray painting.
Size 18" x 36". Tested and is compatible with urethane finishes.

SCOTCH ABRASIVE PADS
Treated fiber sponge, 3/8" thick x 6 x 9-1/2". Very effective mechanical cleaning and fine sanding action. Use with
liquid detergents to clean all metal and painted surfaces.

GLASS THERMOMETER
Mercury, Laboratory Grade, TCA #6357, 30 degrees F to 400 degrees F, in 2 degree increments,
14" long. Used for iron calibration and any other applications requiring accurate temperature information.

SILICONE HEAT SINK COMPOUND
For more accurate thermo transfer during iron calibration. |
